study of paper and steel

For this project I was working with a former professor and we had made several folded paper forms and wanted to see if we could translate that into metal. We made many cardboard mock ups and after finalizing a design laser cut 20 gauge steel and bent it into the shape. Because of the folds careful care had to be taken to get the steel to bend the way we wanted. The study showed that even complex bends can be duplicated in steel if you help the metal ‘want’ to bend that way.

The intent of this project as it grew was to see if we could take the process to a larger scale. A size large enough it could function as a bench. This process took many variations to get a form we were happy with. We were also very nervous if this would be a failure and we would waste time and money cutting a scale mockup. Our intention was to see if we could cut a large enough version that it could function as a bench. To date we have yet to try such an undertaking.
