MIZU

Filtered Water Bottle For Students

700ml

Tritan plastic, Stainless Steel, Kishu Bichotan Charcoal

The Mizu (Japanese for water) water bottle utilizes Kishu Binchotan Charcoal as a way to passively purify water. It is designed as a unique and simple way to provide clean water with a bottle that is easy to clean, use and simple in design.

Why

This project is a water bottle concept developed for Rubbermaid targeting college students at the lead market. Many college campuses are banning the use of disposable water bottles due to its negative environmental impacts. The has put an increasing demand for reusable water bottles. To provide the highest level of functionality the bottles were required to have a filter.

Features & Details

Kishu Binchotan Charcoal

Binchotan charcoal originated 1,200 years ago in Japan. It comes from sustainably sourced wood that is prepared by bringing its temperature to 1000 degrees and then cooling it rapidly, leaving  a smooth hard surface.

The charcoal is an incredibly porous material allowing it to trap impurities. Through this process it releases minerals into the water such as calcium, magnesium, and iron.

Research

Research started with an analysis of online reviews for the top filtered water bottles. Then interviews with the desired user group of college students were done to gain insights into their use habits and pain points with the water bottles they currently use.

Ideation Sketches

Ideation Models & Fabrication

The final model is mocked up was lathed out of 40 lbs foam then primed to provide a scale representation of what the bottle would feel like.
